A Large fragment from a 10-Pound Parrott Artillery shell, Measuring 3 1/2" by 2 1/4" by about 1/2" to 3/4" thick and weighing 11.8 ounces.
Found by John Cullison- 1930-1960. It is possible that it was fired by Bigelow's 9th MA Battery
All of the shells from this group were nicely preserved and are in very stable condition.
A very nice large Artillery shell fragment from a hard-to-find location. This relic was recovered from Excelsior Field (Circled on the map)- the field just north of the Peach Orchard where the NY Excelsior Brigade (70th, 71st, 72nd, 73rd & 74th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments) fought - and was part of the famous Rosensteel Collection. This specific relic was part of the relic collection given to the Rosensteels by John Cullison. Cullison recovered the relics that he gave to the Rosensteels between 1930 and 1960. The Rosensteel Collection is arguably the most famous collection of Gettysburg relics that has ever existed. John Rosensteel opened his Round Top Museum of Gettysburg artifacts in 1888. The collection, which grew in size as a variety of local collections were acquired (including artifacts found by John Cullison), became the nucleus of the Electric Map Museum collection and ultimately the Gettysburg National Park Visitor Center collection. Cullison, a Gettysburg resident, hunted many areas of the battlefield (by eyeballing relics first and then with a metal detector in the 1950s) and carefully identified the location of recovery. All of the Cullison items that did not go to the National Park Service were acquired by a Gettysburg Civil War dealer in the 1990s - Gettysburg Relics acquired this relic from that source
